Bring your old bike back to life!
I built this Soma
for my son to use in Hawaii while going to school. Here are the
details: 55cm Soma Rush White Primo Crank Spider with rocket ring,
Animal platform pedals, Terry Fly Saddle, new blue KMC chain, new
blue flip flop hub...set to fixed only!! Had a bit of fun wrapping
the bars at the top for comfort and using New Origin track grips
at the bottom. Surly Chain Tensioners Origin Stem and Bars Soma
Everwear tires (with blue stripes).
This 70's Peugeot
bike is in the neighborhood of 30 years old, so finding decals was
a bit of a challenge. What we did find seemed to work wonderfully
and with the addition of the cream head tube, really set off this
classic bike.

The original Peugeot had
Mavic Racer center pull brakes, a leather brooks saddle, simplex
gearing and 27" wheels. After a great deal of pondering, we
decided to redesign this old favorite as a fixie, or in our case
a single speed. Creating a new fixie from an old frame gives the
bike new life and the owner a new very enjoyable light ride. In
coming months, we will dedicate more and more space to fixie conversions,
in the mean time try www.fixedgeargallery.com
for some new ideas for that old friend hanging in your garage.
What we like about this
project is the cost. The only new items added were the seat post,
pedals and BB, the rest of the parts are from old bikes we had laying
around. The total cost of the project was only $250(including new
paint). The weight was greatly reduced when we discarded the old
gearing and drive system. The rear cog is a bmx 16t freewheel mounted
on a 35 year old steel wheel. The bottom bracket is a new shimano
bb and crank is a Shimano RSX 3 ring crank(we pulled the two smaller
rings), this gives us a 46x16 gearing. This gearing works great
around most gently rolling areas of Cincinnati. Most of the weight
reduction came from the losing the old crank and BB. For more info
on fixed gears try www.sheldonbrown.com/fixed/index.html.
This is a late 1960's
Bottecchia which we restored with paint and decals, then
built up as a fixie conversion.

This is Sam's 1973
Motobecane Mirage. This is the perfect example of what
to do if you have a bike hanging in the garage and a box full of
parts in the basement. We rebuilt the open pro rims into a freewheel/fixie
and used Sam's spare parts (dura-ace crank, open pro wheels, salsa
stem, terry saddle) to finish this fixie. The bike is light, quick,
and very responsive.
